Leicester Vs Arsenal

Leicester Form: LDDWW

Arsenal Form: WWDDW

Key Man: Jamie Vardy

Things are on the up for both these clubs after questionable starts to the season and that ought to make for an intriguing 12:30 kick off this Saturday.

Leicester had averaged just one goal per game in their opening five fixtures this season, however their last four league games has seen them at least double that figure on every occasion, all whilst going unbeaten. Jamie Vardy has been a key part in that and despite an injury scare, he’s been ruled fit for service in this light heavyweight match up. His current goal scoring exploits against the Gunners means that he needs just one more to equal Wayne Rooney’s record as the most prolific player ever against the club. So, stay tuned for some iconic Jamie Vardy shithousery if he bags in this early kick off!

It’s worth considering here though, that despite Leicester’s improvements going forward they are yet to keep a clean sheet since the opening day of the season. Arsenal are on an impressive run themselves having picked up 14 points from their last 18 available and having battered Villa last time out, they’ll be more than keen to penetrate this shaky back line. Especially Smith Rowe who was exceptional against Villa, earning the MOTM award with a goal and an assist.

It’s a tough one to call in terms of the direction of the result. Goals look to be a certainty and if one team comes out on top it will likely be decided by the little details. A draw & BTTS seems like the correct way to go in my opinion, and I’ll be backing that for this match up.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 1-1
JOSH’S PREDICTION: 2-2

Liverpool Vs Brighton

Liverpool Form: WDDWW

Brighton Form: WDDDL

Key Man: Mohammed Salah

Liverpool’s star man must have Cristiano Ronaldo doing quadruple sessions in his home gym given all the limelight he’s been hogging in the mainstream media. Mohammed Salah has simply been a joke so far this season. Frighteningly good. Ten goals and five assists, in just nine games. He’s well on course for the greatest Premier League season ever statistically.

Therefore, despite Brighton being a tough nut to crack. You won’t find many backing the Seaside outfit against the Reds. The fact that Graham Potter’s men still occupy 5th spot in the table having not won in their last four is testament to how good they’ve been so far. However, there is an old issue emerging that plagued them last season. Goals. Only surpassing a single goal once in their last seven games does not suggest they have the firepower to continue pushing at the higher end of the league.

It could be a tricky day at the office for Klopp in terms of getting that first goal, but you can be confident that a Red victory should be inevitable. If it isn’t Salah, it will likely be Firmino. And if it’s not him, it could be Mane. And if it’s not him it might be Jota. Although, let’s face it- it will be Salah. Liverpool win.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 3-0
JOSH’S PREDICTION: 4-0

Manchester City Vs Crystal Palace

City Form: DWDWW

Palace Form: LDDDD

Key Man: Phil Foden

Pep’s men will be looking to bounce back after their midweek heartbreak in the EFL cup which saw their 1853-day unbeaten streak in the competition shattered. Phil Foden might have missed the deciding penalty from the spot, however his rich grain of form in the league means he’ll come under no criticism. Since being played in a more advanced role four games ago, he’s racked up three goals and two assists, making him one of the hottest players out there right now and he’ll be desperate to bounce back in style.

Meanwhile, Palace come into this off the back of four draws. Their most recent 1-1 against Newcastle was disappointing, but in fairness, their others were against Arsenal, Leicester, and Brighton which is impressive. You can see Viera is building something there and he’s made some astute signings in Connor Gallagher and Odsonne Edouard. Nevertheless, they still occupy 15th spot, and the form book suggests that they aren’t solid enough defensively to keep this Man City side out just yet, as the Eagles still await their first clean sheet on the road.

City are the only side yet to concede on home turf this season, therefore being a stubborn defensive unit is paramount to get anything from a visit to the Etihad. We saw previously Southampton hold city for a bore draw there but that was an anomaly, it won’t happen again anytime soon. So, whilst I would back Viera’s men to put up a relatively stern test and maybe even nick a goal, City should be dominant enough over proceedings to eventually beat Palace into submission.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 3-1
JOSH’S PREDICTION: 2-1

Newcastle Vs Chelsea

Newcastle Form: DDLLD

Chelsea Form: WLWWW

Key Man: Callum Wilson

Chelsea were without their two main strikers last week, but you wouldn’t have known it as you watched them dismantle Norwich 7-0. There was so much talk about Lukaku a few weeks back, however he’s actually had a relatively quiet return to the Bridge in terms of his goal scoring and what we’re seeing now is how brilliant the rest of the squad are. Every single player who played against Norwich last week had scored this season by the time the final whistle blew. Which tells us that it isn’t Romelu Lukaku single handedly dragging Chelsea up to the level that allows them to compete with Liverpool and City, they were already there.

Newcastle on the other hand couldn’t be any further away from Chelsea, although they’ll be hoping that their new cauldron of Saudi investment will elevate them to a similar path within the next few years. All the Toon need to worry about right is now getting through to the January transfer window and staying in the Premier League. Worryingly, they remain winless and Saint Maximin looks to be coming off the boil slightly if recent performances are anything to go by. This however could be a prime opportunity for him to disprove that theory.

Newcastle need something to shock their campaign into life and the return of Callum Wilson could prove key to that. He’s scored in both games since his return from injury and whilst Chelsea might have conceded the least number of goals in the league, their expected goals against figure averages out at 1.72 over the last 10 games. It’s a bold prediction but I have a niggling feeling that there might an upset on the cards at St James Park this weekend. An early goal would get the crowd right behind the team and I’d give Newcastle an outside chance.

Watford Form: WDLLW

Southampton Form: DLLWD

Key Man: Tino Livramento

From a 5-0 battering at the hands of Liverpool, to a 5-2 thrashing of their Scouse counterparts, it has been an eventful start under Ranieri! Don’t get too carried away though Watford fans, you were trailing until the 78th minute… Joshua King’s sensational hattrick was the difference, which makes it difficult to predict how Watford will carry on from now. One thing’s for sure- the defence is an issue. Everton were far from full strength and still managed two, Liverpool five, and that needs to be change.

Fortunately, Southampton are hardly the most prolific having averaged less than a goal per game so far this season. But they can be a tough nut to crack, which makes it a seriously difficult one to call with two very unpredictable sides. Southampton’s draw against Chelsea midweek is enough to slightly turn my head in their direction and suggest that their recent improvements means they’ll have what it takes to narrowly win this.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 1-2
JOSH’S PREDICTION: 1-3

Burnley Vs Brentford

Burnley Form: LDDLD

Brentford Form: WDWLL

Key Man: Ivan Toney

Brentford sitting twelfth in the table is an injustice. They deserve to be higher even though they have come up against some incredibly stiff opposition in their last five matches. So, I was glad when I looked at their next ten games to find that they only come against three top half sides in United, Spurs and Everton. All of which I’d fancy Brentford against any day! Given that the key to their success so far this season has been how tough they are to play against, it’s worth considering adding some Bees defenders into that FPL team now they are due to face some weaker sides.

Meanwhile, Burnley remain winless and it’s no secret as to why. They’ve blanked on four occasions already this season in the league and have only managed to score more than one goal in a game twice. Those numbers don’t do a team’s long-term chances any good. On a positive note, they are showing signs of improvement as they earnt a tough couple of draws against Leicester and Southampton. But they need a more clinical edge. Maxwell Cornet has been a bright spark in recent fixtures, bagging a brace last game against Southampton, and they badly need him to continue in the same manner here.

It shouldn’t prove the most exciting of games. Two very direct and workmanlike teams usually doesn’t spell thriller and that principle will likely hold strong here. Brentford are certainly playing a few levels above Burnley right now and they won’t hesitate to show that as they dispatch of this uninspiring Claret side.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 0-2
JOSH’S PREDICTION: 1-1

Tottenham Vs Manchester United

Spurs Form: LLWWL

United Form: WLDLL

Key Man: Heung Min Son

Where to start with these two. United have conceded nine goals across their last two games. Harry Maguire, the most expensive defender in the world and United captain, is all over the place. Ole has given the team no tactical identity and significantly can’t make his team difficult to beat, which is exactly what they need to be now. One win in their last five games flatters them as they should have lost that game to West Ham as well! So long as Ole remains in charge, United will struggle.

Likewise, Spurs find themselves in a rough patch also. Albeit not of the same intensity. Defensive problems are the name of the game once again, no clean sheet since their 3rd game of the season and they’ve conceded an average of over two goals across their league matches since. All roads lead to a goal fest in this late kick off.

Ronaldo will be hungrier than ever, and you can bank on the Red Devils starting fast as they look to prove a point. Yet significantly for this fixture, Tottenham will love that. Their suited to counter attacking football and the naivety of Solskjaer could again come to fruition. Man for man, United are far superior. However, if Spurs score a couple, players could down tools, who knows. I’m expecting plenty of goals for both sides and potentially Spurs to edge it, which should spell the end for old Ole.

Watford Vs Liverpool

Watford Form: LLWDL

Liverpool Form: DWWDD

Key Man: Trent Alexander Arnold

It would be fair to say Jurgen Klopp isn’t best impressed with the fixture selection this week as his Reds face a refreshed Watford side in the early kick off this Saturday. And understandably so, Fabinho and Allison are due to start for Brazil at 1:30am Friday morning- just 35 hours before Liverpool kick off at Vicarage road! Rumour has it that Watford snubbed Liverpool’s request to move the game to an evening slot, for which you can hardly blame them given that Fabinho and Allison are widely considered to be in the top five best players in the Liverpool roster.

— Transfer News Live (@DeadlineDayLive) October 3, 2021

Meanwhile, Claudio Ranieri will take charge of his new Watford side for the very first time and he’ll be preparing for a baptism of fire despite facing a potentially weakened Liverpool side. As usual, the Italian has been up to his old tricks again, reportedly promising his players an all-expenses paid meal out if they can stop the Red Machine scoring on Saturday.

You’ve got to give it to him, the optimism is respectable, but there is simply no way Liverpool aren’t scoring this weekend. Granted, new managers often inspire a side to an immediate burst of results as players fight to establish themselves under new reign. However, his new team haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 17 games and they happen to be coming up against arguably the hottest player in the world right now in Mo Salah. Rather than focussing on clean sheets, Ranieri should be considering the fact that Liverpool have won just two of their last five games and more specifically, the game against Brentford in which their leaky defence shipped three.

If the Hornets want a result, their best bet is to attack and make the most of the potential absence of Alisson and Fabinho. Through approaching the game in the correct fashion, they might have a very slight outside chance, but I’m still backing a comfortable Liverpool win. Trent’s return to the fold will be crucial, he’s created more chances than any other player in the league this season and he should have a field day.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 0-3
SAM OBASEKI’S PREDICTION: 1-2

Aston Villa Vs Wolves

Villa Form: DLWWL

Wolves Form: LLLWW

Key Man: Matty Cash

Derby day in the West Midlands then for these two rivals and it’s sure to be a close encounter. Despite a very up and down season so far, the Villa have taken 7 from a possible 9 points at home this campaign and Dean Smith seems to have got momentum travelling in the right direction now the Grealish hangover is subsiding. Significantly, of those three home fixtures they’ve conceded just once, which should give the team plenty of confidence coming up against this Wolves team that seem to have been shooting with a blindfold on in most of their games to this point.

Everyone except new signing Hwang Hee Chan anyway, who’s been spearheading the charge for his side and has been the main catalyst for their recent upturn in form. The partnership that is forming between the Korean and Raul Jimenez has seen the duo notch 4 in as many games between them and you can bank on both starting against Villa on Saturday.

Whichever way this one goes, my best tip for this game is under 2.5 goals. Just once has a Wolves fixture this season surpassed the two-goal mark and given how big a game this is for both clubs; you can expect much of the same. In terms of the result- the availability of Emiliano Martinez and Douglas Luiz might be a deciding factor. It looks like Villa will be hit by the same bullet as Liverpool with the South American fixture trouble and that’s enough to turn me away from backing them outright for the victory.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 1-1
SAM OBASEKI’S PREDICTION: 1-1

Leicester Vs Manchester United

Leicester Form: WLLDD

Man U Form: WWWLD

Key Man: Jamie Vardy

Jamie Vardy + (an absent Harry Maguire + an absent Raphael Varane) = Leicester win.

Is that too short a preview? No, in all seriousness, United are going to be in trouble these next few weeks without their two starting central defenders. Everybody witnessed the trouble Liverpool had last year adapting to the loss of core defensive players in their team, and when you consider the lack of a real elite holding midfielder- you worry for United here. Credit to Sky Sports for this great stat which proves this point brilliantly but United are in fact winless in their last five games that Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelöf have started alongside each other.

It’s not like they’re coming up against the most impressive Leicester side this weekend though. Brendan Rodgers has struggled to replicate the form of last season; however, Jamie Vardy’s six goals rank him alongside Mo Salah as the league’s top scorer and he has the tools to punish this unorganised United team given the correct service.

Ronaldo could of course prove me wrong, likewise Pogba and Fernandes, yet without a bout of individual brilliance, Leicester have every chance of winning here for me.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 2-1
SAM OBASEKI’S PREDICTION: 1-2

Manchester City Vs Burnley

Burnley Form: DLLDD

Key Man: Foden

This is safe as houses this fixture. Man City have answered a lot of questions regarding their title credentials in recent weeks and shut plenty of people up. Namely me…

A hugely impressive victory away at Stamford Bridge, followed by playing Liverpool off the park at Anfield and only being denied a victory through sheer genius, Pep’s men have staked their claim. They will be in with a shout come the end, that’s for sure. A few setbacks heading into this one as Ederson, Jesus and Ferran Torres will all be unavailable, but it shouldn’t pose too much of a problem this weekend.

Burnley have managed to scrape just 3 points from their opening 21. They are firm relegation candidates and whilst their performances have often warranted better, the league table never lies. Dyche’s men don’t have the same capacity to grind out results the way they used to and they have problems at both ends of the pitch that need addressing. The key statistic for me here is that each of the last four fixtures between these two at the Etihad has ended 5-0 to the hosts. A pattern which you can be sure will follow in a similar vein on Saturday.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 4-0
SAM OBASEKI’S PREDICTION: 3-1

Norwich Vs Brighton

Norwich Form: LLLLD

Brighton Form: LWWDD

Key Man: Maupay

A slight upturn for Norwich as they scored their first points of the campaign away at Burnley last time out. They’ll need to rally around that small victory and gain some momentum fast if they have any hopes of survival this season, scoring just twice whilst conceding 16 times across their opening 7 fixtures does not make for happy reading. Fans are quickly losing hope and with a trip to Stamford Bridge on the horizon, the Canaries could really do with a result to cling to here.

They’ll have a job though and anyone who would bet against Brighton has got more bravery than me. Sitting just two points off top of the league, Graham Potter truly has hit the sweet spot. Europe is more than realistic for them, but the real acid test will be the games proceeding this as the Seagulls face off against City and Liverpool consecutively.

The result is clear. Brighton will have far too much for this Norwich side. They are a fully established Premier League outfit at this point whereas Norwich are Championship quality through and through. A comfortable win for the away team.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 0-2
SAM OBASEKI’S PREDICTION: 0-2

Southampton Vs Leeds

Southampton Form: DDDLL

Leeds Form: DLDLW

Key Man: Livramento

Tough one to call this. Both teams have struggled through the opening phase of the season and have just 1 win between them from 14, yet both have shown some signs of promise. Southampton were unfortunate last time out against Chelsea and might have gotten a point if it wasn’t for the late James Ward Prowse red card, who’s suspension will leave them short-handed on Saturday. The real issue for Southampton is the Danny Ings shaped hole in their squad. They lack any real firepower without his presence, so much so that they haven’t scored from open play since August 28th and the decision not to bring in a proven Premier League striker seems to be the main factor holding this team back.

They have got a stroke of luck this weekend though, as Patrick Bamford and Raphina will both be unavailable for the trip down South. Arguably Bielsa’s two most important players, certainly going forward anyway, which will make Leeds nowhere near as potent as usual. When you combine that with their catastrophic defensive traits that have seen them concede an average of 2 goals per game, it looks like the stars might aligning for the Saints.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 2-1
SAM OBASEKI’S PREDICTION: 1-2

Brentford Vs Chelsea

Brentford Form: DLWDW

Ready for the surprise of the weekend? Although, maybe it won’t be too much of a surprise given how mightily impressive Brentford have been under Thomas Frank. Beaten just once so far and if you exclude the Liverpool game, the Bees defence has been breached on just 3 occasions. Which tells you all you need to know about how solid this London outfit really is. Ivan Toney has begun to turn in the kind of performances that people were whispering about pre-season and is arguably in the top three form players in the league right now. All in all, Brentford really are flying.

Significantly for this match up, Chelsea have several key players who are doubtful for Saturday following the international break: Silva, Rudiger, James, Pulisic could all miss out for a number of different reasons. Whilst star man Lukaku also remains short of full fitness even if he does feature.

It might be an unpopular opinion, but the Blues have dropped off from their lofty standards they set at the start of the season. They were fortunate to win against Southampton, far below par against City and they could get stung by the Bees here. A narrow victory for Brentford in a fiery game that could leave Tuchel with a bitter taste in his mouth.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 2-1
SAM OBASEKI’S PREDICTION: 1-2

Everton Vs West Ham

Everton Form: WWLWD

West Ham Form: DDLWL

Key Man: Doucore

Personally, some of the hype around West Ham is beginning to become unjustified. They started the season incredibly well, yet it should be said with a rather generous fixture list, and still managed to win on just three occasions. Moyes has created a team that excels playing counter attacking football and it’s so effective when the opposition plays expressively against them, but as demonstrated in their draw & defeat to Palace & Brentford, it doesn’t work nearly as well against teams that are more willing to let them have the ball.

Which is exactly the kind of team this Rafa Benitez side is. Directness personified, it’s no coincidence that Everton’s average possession has dropped from 47% to 42% from last season. The Toffees are more than happy to sit back and allow the opposition to play and what’s more, they rank 18th for touches in the middle third which suggests how much Everton look to use long ball tactics under Rafa. You can expect Everton to sit off and only engage West Ham once they begin to advance up the pitch, there won’t be any space left to be exploited in behind.

Everton have the set up to beat the Hammers here.

SAM’S PREDICTION: 2-1
SAM OBASEKI’S PREDICTION: 1-2

Newcastle Vs Tottenham Hotspur

Newcastle Form: DLDDL

Spurs Form: WLLLW

Key Man: Harry Kane

The new era begins on Tyneside. Read that again.

This really is history and well worth a watch on Sunday. Newcastle United are now by far the richest club in the land and the fans have finally got what they wanted so the atmosphere should be absolutely rocking inside St. James’ Park on Sunday. The question is- will this be enough to turn their season around and get their first win on the board? The Magpies currently occupy 19th spot in the table, are winless, and let’s face it, could even be considered outsiders for relegation. Which would be some story if it was to ever happen after recently becoming the richest club on God’s green earth…

In terms of the game this weekend, as much as it would be great to see them kickstart the new era with a bang, they’re lack of quality tells me it can’t happen. Spurs aren’t in the best of form, in particular Harry Kane who hasn’t even scored in the league yet. However, they got the win away at Villa Park last time out which should prove much more of a test than this frail Newcastle outfit. Kane will begin to come good at some point and I’m opting for him to be the key man here.

With the news this year that PES would no longer exist and has been replaced by the brand new eFootball edition, it seems for the first time FIFA is in a league of its own. While many have always felt PES was in the shadow of EA’s FIFA titles, it has taken many editions for this defining moment in the eSports world, with the future potentially heading to free to play games with unlockable modes through in-app purchases.

We look back through the ages and take in the most memorable moments throughout the successful titles over the years.

The Golden Age

Where better a place to start, than the era of dominance for the FIFA titles. From FIFA 12 with ‘Wazza’ the headliner, to FIFA 14 with Lionel Messi as the poster boy, those three consecutive titles mark the greatest period for EA.

The introduction of Online Seasons, coupled with the improvements made to defending and the new dribbling features, meant the games had a new lease of life and utilised the advances in technology.

Looking back at the titles now, these editions perhaps were never given the recognition they deserved for their soundtracks, with many fans missing the indies and house bangers that were associated with these titles.

Modern Problems

Despite the advances in technology, the improvements in graphics, and the adoption of the new frostbite engine, the most recent titles haven’t been received as well as they should have by the gaming community.

While teething problems and major glitches have played a part, the introduction of game modes such as FUT Champs and The Journey have contributed to giving FIFA a comfortable edge over PES.

Had it not been for gameplay issues – that has pushed some in the FIFA community to dub the recent titles as unplayable – it would be scary to think how successful these editions could have gone on to be.

FIFA Street

A ground-breaking conception, inspired by the likes of Ronaldinho, the original edition of FIFA Street caused a whole generation to recreate audacious flicks and tricks on a football field.

It brought street football into the frame and brought originality to the franchise. While the future releases didn’t do well to build on from the original, the introduction of VOLTA on FIFA 20 caused many to reminisce.

The rainbow flicks, the showboating, sombrero flicks, all the different skill combos used to embarrass your opponent in the cages brought an element of real life, we played the game as if it was ourselves in the cages down the road.

FIFA World Cup

Perhaps the most iconic edition of the lot, FIFA 98, included the ‘Road to World Cup’ mode. The ability to play as any of the 172 FIFA registered nations was massive.

Countries who rarely feature on the game were able to be selected, giving immense pride and a great sense of culture to gamers from those nations.

2010 also saw the release of FIFA World Cup South Africa, again including the nations from across the globe. The game did well to capture the buzz around the historical World Cup.

FIFA Ultimate Team

FIFA 09 is remembered as one of the legendary releases, due to the introduction of Ultimate Team as a downloadable extension on both the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Across the years we’ll have memories of buying coins, destroying controllers because of a silver El Shaarawy, the MSN before MSN of Gervinho, Doumbia, and Ibarbo.

The game mode was and remains FIFA’s MVP, despite introducing the price caps, killing third party coin buying, the mode remained strong and was improved year on year by EA.

Pro Clubs

Arguably the best game mode known to man on FIFA. The Ballon D’or Winner voted by the streets. Pro Clubs introduced in FIFA 10 has been one of the most enjoyable moments since its inception.

Responsible for hours of rage, laughter, and destroying friendships, the game mode was a stroke of genius from those responsible at EA, the unlockable and customisation features provided something new to the titles.

Recently neglected, it remains to be seen how FIFA views this game mode and what methods they take in order to rejuvenate it, and propel its popularity.

This weekend, in-game management came to the fore once again – and two teams learned how a single substitution can hurt you in the hardest way possible, writes Shivam Pathak

Chelsea’s final goal against Tottenham Hotspur seemed to encapsulate everything that had gone right for the Blues – and all that could have gone wrong for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. Timo Werner, who had come on from the bench midway through the second half, hadn’t had a great cameo up until that point: taking a poor touch to end a bulldozing counter-attack earlier, but that didn’t matter. From a corner, the forward was able to identify some space in the right channel, before looking up and noticing that his compatriot, Antonio Rüdiger, had drawn back away from his marker. One German player found another, and with a tidy finish, two centre-backs had got on the scoresheet. A clever routine had worked, while Tottenham lost grasp of their defensive ABC’s.

Thomas Tuchel tried to hide it, but smiled coyly as he shook hands with his opposite number at full-time, before beaming broadly as he greeted his players on-field. He got it right. With both sides in stalemate at the half, he made a seemingly inconspicuous change – Kanté for Mount. Hang on: they’re looking for a goal. Removing an attacking midfielder for more central control? Why? Twitter frothed with alternative suggestions. Yet of course, the Frenchman’s presence created plenty of 3-on-2 situations, and the fact that he scored just “had to be”.

After going three wins from three, Tottenham look at two consecutive Premier League defeats, with a European draw against Rennes lodged in-between. With Arsenal on the horizon this weekend, Santo will know that he has to draw some energy from somewhere to feed the front three. His side are early favourites with the bookies, but not by much.

Just 45 minutes before kick-off in N17, West Ham were forced to swallow a bitter pill. Martin Atkinson’s refereeing made himself an obvious discussion point, and debates raged regarding whether or not Cristiano Ronaldo should have earned a spot-kick on more than one occasion. With the Hammers awarded a last-gasp penalty kick, David Moyes took the decision to send on Mark Noble (whose penalty conversion rate was only bettered by Robert Lewandowski in 2020) to try and put his side level. There were some serious shades of the Euro 2020 final here, though. He was cold, physically and mentally. Despite his prowess from 12 yards, for him to take a kick on which the outcome of the game lied with added time all but over in front of the fans was always going to be an anomaly from his statistics.

Indeed, things were slightly better for their North London rivals. Unconvincing at points, but they came away with all three of them, with a moment of inspiration from Martin Ødegaard putting their side into a lead that they were able to hold onto, though with some better decision making in the final third, it could have been more. Takehiro Tomiyasu is already appearing to get settled at right-back, with Gabriel and Ben White in front of Aaron Ramsdale – the goalkeeping situation still unclear. With six points in the last two, Arsenal propel themselves out of the bottom of the table, but there’s plenty to be done. The front line aren’t quite on the same wave-length at this period of time, but Mikel Arteta knows there’s signs that that can be remedied with the right coaching.

There’s no reason for Manchester City to be overly concerned about how they played yesterday – more that there was cause for Southampton celebration. The Saints were condemned to defeat long before kick-off, by predictors, odds and writers (myself included), something that I can only hold my hand up and say that I got wrong. Ralph Hassenhüttl was vocal and raucous on the sideline, and got his reward. Tino Livramento dug in at right-back, dealing with the ever-dangerous Jack Grealish who looked to pounce off the shoulder. Jan Bednarek showed all of his experience leading his defence, and came out with a clean sheet and without a yellow card.

Guardiola put out of all of his cavalry. Riyad Mahrez, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden were all tasked with working up a bit of magic, but while of course the home side dominated possession of the ball, they failed to get into incisive spaces – having to in fact wait until the 90th minute just to have a shot on target. The Sky Blues have never been a side that go on runs of consistently fail to create chances, more that it just seems to happen erratically. In the case of the Champions League final, for example, it was at the worst possible time.

The question that naturally sat on everyone’s lips was again about City’s striker situation – with Romelu Lukaku’s presence up front causing Tottenham numerous problems on Sunday, even if he didn’t score. You can’t excuse a lack of chances from the City side because of this, though – there’s more than enough firepower in this side to blow sides away without a traditional centre-forward. Yet until January, when the next opportunity to recruit arises, Pep will need to imbue a killer instinct into his side, with the ante-post outright odds for the League title that had his side as clear favourites already beginning to lengthen.

A team that are arguably playing with too much instinct is Norwich City, who are looking pitiful at the foot of the table. Watford was, simply put, a game they had to take a point or more from. Despite this, Daniel Farke attempted to play ball that his team just can’t sustain. Adaptation to the requirements of the Premier League from the Championship is a key aspect of survival or better – as Brentford did remarkably against Wolves, bringing men back and forth when needed, before defending valliantly after a red card. Billy Gilmour and Kenny McLean strained to work the midfield, but they simply had too much to do.

Nothing is sealed at this part of the season: teams are still learning and adapting. Yet there’s plenty of food of thought for managers on both sides of the standings – and for the sides chasing objectives like survival or trophies, the window in which you’re allowed to make mistakes is starting to expire.

Last week, Sam took on EOTB host Darren Balogun in his score predictions against the football community. Sam claimed GW3 55-35, extending his lead to 20 points going into gameday 5. This week, the football community is represented by fellow High Press columnist, and sports Journalist Shivam Pathak. How will Shivam get on in representing the football community against Sam’s predictions?

Newcastle Vs Leeds

NUFC Form: LLDL

LUFC Form: LDDL

Key Man: Saint Maximin

Sky TV must have heard that we wanted goals this Friday night because this looks set to be a free for all! In just four games, these two have shipped no fewer than 23 goals to their respective opposition. So, it’s hardly a surprise they’re both still hunting their first win of the campaign.

For Steve Bruce in particular, the importance of this game can’t be understated. The pressure is mounting for the Newcastle manager and he needs results to appease a fan base that is growing increasingly uneasy with the brand of football they’re seeing. To make things worse, Callum Wilson and Martin Dubravka will miss out and can be added to an already extensive injury list, which is leaving them short on options across the pitch.

So, it’s not looking good at Newcastle. Although, if they play their cards right then they could get something from this game. Saint Maximin has been the shining light for the Magpies, and he can hurt this Leeds side that could be described as ‘vulnerable’ at best. The supposed effectiveness of the Bielsa style is quickly being proven a fallacy and whilst they might create plenty of opportunities, the gaps they leave to be exploited is becoming ridiculous. If they don’t begin to tighten up ship, they could find themselves not far above a relegation scrap.

Both teams to score is a certainty in a game that could still leave both sides winless this season.

Wolves Vs Brentford

WWFC Form: LLLW

BFC Form: WDDL

Key Man: Hwang Hee Chan

This should be an interesting match-up. Despite their tricky start to the season, Wolves got their first three points on the board last time out and are now due a very favourable run of fixtures, so I’m expecting them to begin to gather some momentum now. However, Brentford are proving a tough nut to crack given Thomas Frank’s emphasis on clean sheets and boast the second lowest expected goals conceded ratio in the league to date.

Bruno Lage might be sweating a bit over that, considering that his forwards would have needed a handful of attempts to score in an open net before last weekend, but it’s surprising what an important three points can do for a team’s confidence. Similarly, the Bees have only managed to score once since their opening day victory against Arsenal, so all roads lead to a one goal winning margin here.

The new signings have been on fire this season and Wolves new man- Hwang Hee Chan, bagged last weekend. I fancy a narrow home victory with Chan to score the winner.

CPFC Form: LDDW

Key Man: Trent Alexander Arnold

Liverpool are in a brilliant spell at the minute. They’re unbeaten in 15 in the league. Have kept five clean sheets in their last six. Yet more than that, they’re looking more imposing going forward again. The consistent presence of Jota has greatly attributed to that, he’s so sharp and intelligent in his movements around the box and I think he’ll have some joy this weekend as you’d expect Alexander Arnold to get plenty of space in behind Wilfried Zaha.

Although, what goes around comes around and we all know Zaha will be waiting to pounce if Trent ventures too far into attacking territory. New boy Ibrahima Konate is being tipped two start alongside VVD so it will be interesting to see how he would fair 1 vs 1 with the lively Ivorian, as in truth, counter attacking will be Palace’s only hope.

Liverpool at Anfield will be the hardest game for anyone in the league this season. So, even though Viera’s men were superb against Spurs, I don’t give them much chance at all. VVD and Fabinho will ensure the game runs like clockwork for the home side, and it will be the job of Liverpool’s various creators to wear Palace down.

Key Man: Gabriel

Finally, things are looking up for Arsenal. It wasn’t a vintage home victory over Norwich, but it got the job done. The injury list is beginning to thin out and things are starting to look up, so taking on this poor Burnley side provides a good opportunity for the Gunners to march up the league. The Clarets are winless in their last twelve home fixtures and have so far racked up just one point this season. Fears of a relegation battle are looming…

Gabriel will be key in this fixture. The Brazilian truly is a brilliant defender and brings so much to Arsenal’s defensive prospects. Burnley love to bully teams when allowed, so he’ll need to be a powerful presence alongside the young Ben White and provide the Gunners with a platform from which their extra quality can shine through.

It will be a difficult slog; however, Arsenal should run out eventual winners if they maintain their composure. Keep a keen eye on Aubameyang because despite his goal last week, their talisman has been so below par this season and needs to step it up here.

SFC Form: LDDD

Key Man: Ferran Torres

An easy one to call this. One way traffic will be the name of the game, all coming from the Manchester direction. As Pep Guardiola alluded to, (whilst he pleaded for more fans to turn out after their Champions League fixture on Wednesday), City have scored sixteen goals in their last three home matches, and whilst Southampton have improved in recent weeks on their way to earning three consecutive draws, they won’t have enough here.

Kevin De Bruyne is expected to start, along with Ferran Torres up top, so I’d be inclined to suggest that duo could produce several goals and assists. Whether Southampton could hurt City at the other end? The lackadaisical performance that saw City ship three to Leipzig might suggest that to be the case, but I’m happy to back Pep’s men to tighten up again in what should be a comfortable victory.

WFC Form: WLLL

Key Man: The Ref

Norwich really, really need this win. Admittedly, the fixture list hasn’t been kind to Daniel Farke, however it won’t be getting better anytime soon. Three out of their next four games are against top half teams and given the fact Norwich’s Premier League losing streak stretches back fifteen matches, you worry for them.

Meanwhile, Watford’s great start to the season against Villa has capitulated also. I’ve raised doubts over the level of quality players in their side previously. It’s simple, keep Ismaila Sarr quiet and they don’t have an answer. They’ve got the lowest total XG in the league over the past three game weeks and it seems like everyone’s got them sussed already.

It’s a massive game for both clubs and tensions could easily boil over by the time the final whistle comes. I can’t split them, so honours even, with a red card prediction thrown into the mix.

Key Man: Doucore

Villa might have lost 3-0 to Chelsea last weekend but they showed the first signs of the potential everyone expected from them this season. Dean Smith’s decision to switch to a back three seemed to help them creatively as they mustered 18 shots on Edouard Mendy’s goal and despite what the score line suggests, it was more defensive lapses in concentration that allowed Chelsea to punish them than anything else.

Another performance like that and Rafa’s toffees could be in for a serious game, but I can’t side with Villa over this Everton side. I waxed lyrical about the effect Rafa has had on this team previously and he proved it again last week against Burnley. Villa have kept just two clean sheets in their last 16 games and the goals have been flowing even without DCL.

I’m banking on away win here at a shockingly big price of 2/1.

MUFC Form: WDWW

Key Man: Cristiano Ronaldo

Well, this could be interesting. The Hammers are flying high following their European triumph, whilst United need to bounce back following their recent embarrassment at the hands of Young Boys. This is the sort of match up that will truly test their title credentials and they need a response. Fortunately for them, the loss of Michail Antonio will be felt heavily by West Ham. The talisman has notched 7 goal contributions in four games and is irreplaceable in their front line.

In truth, I would 100% take on United here if Michail Antonio was fit. This David Moyes side seems the perfect formula to combat the way they play. Statistically, Man United have played with the highest defensive line in the league this year and where West Ham excel is on the counter-attack. It makes sense.

Yet, there’s no telling how they will adapt without their star man. Ronaldo is hungry to keep churning out goals and that’s enough to turn me off to the idea of backing the London side for a win with him in the equation. Beyond that, West Ham will have had just two days to recover from their tricky away European encounter. Too many factors point away from the Hammers to back the underdog, even though it was tempting.

LCFC Form: WLWL

Key Man: Yves Bissouma

Brighton remind me a lot of Leicester in some ways, albeit a few years back in terms of development. They are a top footballing team, with no nonsense defenders and a brilliant enforcer in midfield. Leicester have more quality throughout the ranks and the added bonus of Jamie Vardy, but Brighton are in a better moment.

Not to mention the fortress that is the Amex. They have a brilliant Premier League record there in recent times, losing only once in their last seven home games, which suggests it will be a tough day at the office for Leicester who have been desperately struggling for goals. My only concern for the Seagulls is how susceptible the likes of Shane Duffy and Adam Webster could be to the pace of Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy, otherwise I’d be looking to back them for a win.

It should be a closely fought affair and could well end up honours even.

Key Man: N’Golo Kante

Spurs were humbled last weekend and it confirmed everyone’s beliefs that they certainly will not be challenging for the Champions League places this year. In a one-off game however, they could prove a real problem for the top sides, as they demonstrated on the opening day against Man City. The defensive nature of the way Nuno sets up his teams will make them stubborn opposition for Chelsea, who certainly won’t have it all their own way.

Heung Min Son also looks set to return to the ranks, which should concern a Chelsea defence that surprisingly conceded plenty of chances to Villa in their last game. They’ll need to tighten up ship for this affair with Harry Kane leading the line, although, you would expect them to do just that. Tuchel has an exemplary away record, losing only once on the road since his appointment, and the expected return of N’Golo Kante can only mean great things for the Blues.

The bookies certainly seem to agree, with Spurs currently sitting at 17/4 to win the fixture. And whilst I think they do seem rather big odds given what they did to Man City a few weeks back, I rate Chelsea more as a team than their Manchester title rivals. It’s bound to be tight, ultimately though, Chelsea will run out winners.

Last week, Sam took on News UK Sports Editor Kieran Benn in his score predictions against the football community. With a correct prediction from both sides, but more correct results on one end, Sam claimed GW3 45-35, leaving him with a 10 point lead going into gameday 4. This week, the football community is represented by Eyes On The Ball co-host, and Manchester United fan Darren Balogun. How will Darren get on in representing the football community against Sam’s predictions?

Viera’s Palace will welcome Nuno’s Spurs to Selhurst park in what will be their fifth consecutive London derby. The Eagles are yet to register a win in any of those matches but earnt an impressive draw away at West Ham prior to the international break and could easily have run out winners if Benteke could have converted from close range in the final moments. It’s expected they’ll have new signing Odsonne Edouard leading the line from now and he’s sure to bring a more clinical nature to proceedings going forward. A key ingredient that Palace will surely need if they want to get anything from this game given the fact Spurs are yet to concede in the league and boast a 100% win percentage.

However, despite what the form might suggest, I think Palace have good chance of getting a result here. Spurs are winless from their last three visits to Selhurst Park and the home team are coming off two solid performances in the league, one of which included a clean sheet at home to Brentford. Heung Min Son is an injury doubt and if he doesn’t play, the way he compliments Kane will be a huge miss for Spurs who could struggle to break down this resolute Palace side. So long as Connor Gallagher puts in the type of performance he did against West Ham, his quality, along with that of Zaha and Edouard, will give Palace a fighting chance here.

Whether you’re bunkering down in your living room at 10:30pm to watch Match of the day or sourcing a not so legitimate stream, this is the game we all want to see this weekend.

Bruce’s men have conceded at least twice in every game so far, including four against the Hammers, who happen to be the only decent attacking side they’ve faced. So, the prospect of facing one of the game’s greatest ever goal scorers should really strike fear into the hearts of all Newcastle fans. I’ve personally thought Man United have lacked a proper goal scorer for a while now and the fact they’ve signed Ronaldo should be the final piece in the jigsaw that will allow them to mount a title challenge once again. The iconic frontman will thrive on the creative produce from Pogba and Fernandes and could easily push for 30 goals this season. Never mind the effect he’ll have on the rest of the squad and club as a whole.

The showman never fails to show up on the big stage and Ronaldo’s Premier League return is one of the biggest. I fancy him for a brace here and a hiding for Newcastle in what should be a frenetic atmosphere at Old Trafford.

Key Man: Michail Antonio

This will be an interesting game. Southampton were so attacking against Newcastle racking up an expected goals tally of 3.88 and I’m still not convinced by West Ham’s defending at all. They shipped two to Palace, two to Newcastle, yet their red-hot form going forward has made the Hammers the talk of the town.

If their poor defending continues to go unaddressed, it will come back to bite them once their front players form begins to fizzle out. However, will it here? Doubtful. Adam Armstrong looks like a good player in the making and a decent replacement for Danny Ings, but the Saints are lacking a quality goal scorer in the present moment. So, whilst they should score, the form of Antonio and the various playmakers in behind him for West Ham should be enough to outgun Southampton and allow the London club to run out victorious.

Both these teams have been amongst the most impressive so far this season for me. New boys Brentford remain undefeated and have excelled in making games difficult for their opposition. Whereas Brighton look to be making that step from relegation candidate to established Premier League club. They’ve built on their already sturdy defence by adding some much-needed goals to their game and are well placed to have a great season.

Both managers prioritise keeping it tight at the back and there certainly won’t be free flowing goals. Brentford will have home advantage, but I think Graham Potter’s side have the superior quality throughout the ranks to hurt the home side. Bissouma in particular has been imperious in the midfield; his presence, and the creative flair of Neil Maupay, will be key in getting Brighton over the line for a narrow win.

MCFC Form: LWW

Key Man: Kevin De Bruyne

Leicester love playing against Man City. They’ll be looking to score their third win in four against Pep’s men here and happen to have caught them at a good time as well given Ederson’s suspension and the positive COVID case returned by their second keeper. 36-year-old veteran Scott Carson remains City’s only option in net and to say the former Liverpool back up is short on game time would be an understatement, so Leicester will want to test him throughout. Although, the Foxes aren’t exactly in the best of situations themselves having been relatively underwhelming so far given everyone’s lofty expectations for them this year.

Man City of course are big favourites, and you would expect them to score a few with KDB set to return to the starting eleven and the team’s recent run of goals. But Vardy bagged a hattrick against City last season and Ashley Barnes has the pace to thrive against their high line and expansive set up, so they could get plenty of opportunities to beat Scott Carson if they’re fully at it.

This has all the hall marks of a high scoring thriller, so I’ll be going with a very ambitious prediction here.

WWFC Form: LLL

Key Man: Adama Traore

Wolves absolutely outplayed United in their last fixture. No doubt about it. However, their dry spell in front of goal is something out of the ordinary. 58 shots on goal so far this campaign and not one has struck gold. Surely, the floodgates will open soon.

And when they do, you can bank on Adama Traore being the catalyst. He’s consistently the main man for Wolves and has ripped through high level opposition defenders in recent weeks. There has been criticism aimed at his final product, but Wolves have a very favourable run of fixtures from now and I fancy him to start bringing some returns against the lesser teams as they get more chances.

Not that he’ll have it all his own way. Watford did get the better of Villa at Vicarage Road and Palace in the cup, so they could spring a surprise. Yet, for me there’s still plenty of question marks over the quality of that side and I think Wolves are about to hit a good patch.

NFC Form: LLL

Key Man: Gabriel

There’s big pressure on Arsenal, this truly is a must win if they want to avoid hitting rock bottom. Arteta will be counting his lucky stars that a raft of first team players look set to return in Gabriel, Ben White, and Thomas Partey, who will offer a much-needed boost to the North London side. Gabriel really is going to be key in steadying the ship. He was their stand-out last season, and his physical presence is an absolute necessity in an Arsenal back line that is looking fragile at best on current form.

Fortunately for them, Norwich haven’t looked overly threatening despite their tricky fixture list and an ageing Teemu Pukki shouldn’t have them sweating too much. The start will be crucial, if Norwich can turn the crowd on the home team it could be an eventful evening. Otherwise, the superior quality of the Gunners should shine through, easing the pressure on Mikel. For the time being anyway…

AVFC Form: LWD

Key Man: Mason Mount

Unlike a lot of the games this weekend, this one seems a certainty. Villa have been poor this season. Many people, myself included, looked at the summer recruitment from Villa and tipped them for big things, but adapting to the gaping hole that Jack Grealish has left in their side has proven more difficult than first thought. The team clearly need time to gel, especially going forward. So, breaching a defence that managed to shut out Liverpool with 10-men at Anfield might be asking a bit much…

Anyway, they’ll be too busy keeping the Blues out at the other end to worry about that. Romelu Lukaku picked up a minor knock on international duty but is expected to lead the line against Villa in what would be his first home game back at Stamford Bridge. The big Belgium was quiet against Liverpool, mainly feeding off scraps, however he should have much more joy here as Mason Mount and others will be expected to dictate proceedings throughout.

It should be a fairly routine victory for Chelsea who won’t get out of second gear.

LFC Form: WWD

Key Man: Thiago

Liverpool are another side that have been disrupted by the Brazilian player ban for this game week with Allision, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino all set to miss the clash at Elland Road. The keeper problem could again cause issue when you consider how important Fabinho is defensively to the Reds and the ‘all guns blazing approach’ from Bielsa. However, Leeds haven’t really impressed enough to suggest they can prove any real danger to Liverpool in this fixture so long as they have their general ‘VVD’ commanding the back line.

The Yorkshire outfit have shipped eight goals already this campaign and Liverpool have the firepower to add plenty more to that tally on Sunday. Thiago is set to return to the starting eleven and the open nature of the game should provide the perfect platform for the Spaniard to display his creative talents, which will surely have Jota and Mo Salah licking their lips in anticipation.

Leeds might well score, but it won’t be enough to stop the Reds, who will be hungry to bounce back from their draw with Chelsea.

BFC Form: LLD

Key Man: Demarai Gray

Hopefully it’s a cold Monday night on Merseyside this coming week. It would be suitable for this fixture in what should be an old-style English football clash. The new Everton under Rafa is purposeful and effective, characterised by a direct approach that means they have only averaged 71% passing accuracy to this point, which when compared to Ancelotti’s 86% at this stage last term, demonstrates the drastic shift in style they’ve gone through. A stat bettered only by Burnley, who are of course famous for their direct approach, with a 68% passing completion rate.

So, expect plenty of long balls, crosses, and turnovers in possession amongst a feisty affair. Where Everton will have the edge, apart from their added quality in attacking areas, is the pace of the in-form Demarai Gray. The new signing has been scintillating since he arrived on Merseyside and has been key in creating an abundance of chances for DCL, whilst also notching himself against Brighton and Leeds. He’s become that perfect cut price midfielder in many an FPL team and he should be lively against an ageing Burnley defence here, creating plenty of opportunities.

Everton to edge it.

After a remarkable transfer window, it’s easy to forget what happened on the pitch this weekend – but it revealed just why recruitment was so high this summer.

Last weekend, it may be fair to say that the on-field action was overshadowed. That’s a word often with negative connotations – like something seriously bad had occurred, but not in this
case, depending on your point of view. This transfer market was historic – with the two greatest players of this era both moving; a Premier League side the beneficiary of one of the
deals.

He’s back.#MUFC | #RonaldoReturns

— Manchester United (@ManUtd) August 31, 2021

That is, of course, the one story to dominate the football headlines this week, and it involves the transfer of one of the game’s greatest ever to the club where he grew from a talent to a star. Elsewhere, the Tottenham transfer saga seems to have come to a close, with Harry Kane confirming on social media that he would be staying at White Hart Lane, and across the seas, Leo Messi finally played in another club’s jersey.

For Manchester United, Ronaldo shakes up the plans. He had not been on great terms with Juventus’ coaching staff towards the back-end of his spell: indeed being benched for the Bianconeri’s opening game of the season, before the various links away and the stunning day which saw him in talks with the blue half of Manchester in the morning, before being confirmed to have reached a deal with his former employer by the end.

Against Wolves, where events were of course overshadowed, some United fans indeed admitted that things could have gone worse. Conceding 15 shots, six on target, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer benefitted from the fact that Wolves have taken just shy of 60 attempts so far this season – putting none into the back of the net.

Ronaldo’s signing can only remedy oh-so-much; there’s valid cause to remember that for all of the near-guaranteed brilliance he will provide, it may only paper over the cracks in midfield.

Chelsea, who have a better midfield in Kante, Jorginho & Kovacic have just signed Saul Niguez but Man United with Fred & Matic won’t Neves/Bissouma.

It’s hard to believe anyone at the club actually realize how badly we need a defensive midfielder. Unbelievable.

— RuthlessRashy (@datmufcfan) September 1, 2021

Things didn’t start particularly well for Mikel Arteta, and despite the fact that Manchester City were indeed seriously tipped to get the victory, he still knows how timidly his side performed. Across the 90 minutes, the side took one shot and showed no desire to win the ball, allowing Ederson to take all the time on the ball he desired – which, for someone of his ball-playing
stature, was a dreadful mistake.

Indeed, on the ball, City were fluent and easy on the eye – with Jack Grealish assisting one goal before sauntering down to Leeds Festival to appear with Stormzy on stage; such jaunts are currently a long way from the mind of any Arsenal player.

i’m crying wtf why did stormzy just bring jack grealish out at leeds pic.twitter.com/4gOEYLwYRJ

— em (@emshammm) August 28, 2021

The weekend in fact ended with the Gunners at the bottom of the table, with their nemeses Spurs sitting atop the perch. Spurs have spent too – most recently securing the signing of Emerson Royal from Barcelona, as the final day of the window has been marked with a flurry of window shopping. It will take plenty of time to see the impacts of buying (or, for some clubs like Liverpool, the notable lack thereof), so it is foolish to judge new signatures.

Arsenal have spent around £150 million, leaving them genuinely without excuse, while Spurs have kept their talisman, and Nuno Espirito Santo will be confident of putting the saga
behind him and allowing Kane to return to his well-known triumphant best.

Liverpool v Chelsea was a clash between the two sides who have both paid for just one player this season. Thomas Tuchel’s men splashed big on Romelu Lukaku, while Liverpool
shelled a conservative £36m on Leipzig centre-back Ibrahima Konate – something that frustrated many Reds fans, as they felt that squad depth remained a serious issue up front
and in midfield. In fact, by the time this article had been drafted, Chelsea had recruited Saúl Ñiguez on loan, a testament to Marina Granovskaia’s determination to not let any potential
window of serious attraction pass them by.

Chelsea showed real spirit after Reece James was sent off – defending valiantly while still chiselling out a few productive attacking shapes in the second half, while Jurgen Klopp’s side
were stifled in front of the Kop. The two German managers greeted each other happily at the end of the proceedings, a handshake and hug full of similar ambition and philosophy, albeit
with different bankrolls.

In fact, the last of the three managers from the great European nation may be feeling frustrated. Daniel Farke likely knew that his side were likely to open with defeats when their nasty opening run of matches was announced, but against Leicester had their chances, especially with their pacey right-back Ricardo forced off after just five minutes. Recruits such as Billy Gilmour, Josh Sargent and Milot Rashica will know that to overcome the odds and beat relegation will be a challenge, but there are already signs it’s far from impossible.

This window was another flex of not only the top six’s muscle, but that of the Premier League in general. Recruitment was widespread across the division – talent pouring in across the table. Foreign players new and sometimes old will be keen to make inroads, and domestic talent taking their steps up should mean that this year’s table gets very congested.

Time will tell how Kieran will fair in representing the football community against Sam’s predictions.

Manchester City Vs Arsenal

Head-To-Head: 60 (City) – 45 – 98 (Arsenal)

City Form: LW

Arsenal Form: LL

Key Man: Mahrez

It’s the master versus the apprentice in the opener this weekend. And the drowning apprentice at that…

#ArtetaOut is already spreading like a virus throughout much of the Gunners fanbase and the pressure is already mounting on the Spaniard so early in the season. Rumour has it that Mikel has the next two Premier League games to save his job and let’s be frank, he won’t be getting anything from this encounter.

The key to any successful football team is having a strong defence and therefore foundations to build upon. Rob Holding and Pablo Mari are not what you’d describe as a ‘strong centre-back partnership.’ In fact, it’s rather pitiful, which Lukaku made no qualms about proving as he tore them to shreds on his debut last weekend.

So, Arsenal’s defence are currently in tatters and City have just thumped Norwich 5-0. Seems straight forward in principle. Although, unlike many, I’m not totally sold on Man City being back to their best. It was an exhibition last weekend but the deficit in quality was so vast it was partially expected. I still think they need a striker to add goals in the bigger games given how much stronger the other challengers look this season.

The fact that City don’t deploy that traditional ‘number 9’ could help the flailing Arsenal centre-backs, in terms of taking a bit of pressure directly off them. Tactically, Arsenal will sit back, soak up the pressure and look to break with speed. The return of Aubameyang will help on that front and De Bruyne remains a doubt so City will be without their key creator.

I fancy the Gunners to score but City to run out eventual winners as their superior quality shines through.

Villa Form: LW

Brentford Form: WD

Key Man: Leon Bailey

Elsewhere, Villa bounced back from their opening day setback by dispatching of Newcastle 2-0 in a game that included a stunning over head kick by new boy Danny Ings. The Claret & Blue remain a relatively unknown quantity this season and we’ll need a few more games before we can get a clearer picture of the situation they find themselves in. One thing’s for sure though, chances have hardly been free flowing, and this stubborn Brentford team will try to exploit that.

Two clean sheets under the belt, ceding only two shots on target away at Palace last time out. We know what the Bees are about now. And Thomas Frank has clearly made sure they’re well drilled for life in the big time. Much like Villa, and probably as to be expected, chances have been particularly hard to come by so far when you look at their average XG, which stands at around 0.7 goals per game. So, we’d ought to get a tight match up, if all goes by the book.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Brentford land another scalp but I’m siding with the home team. Just…

Brighton Vs Everton

Head-To-Head: 4 (Brighton) – 6 – 9 (Everton)

Brighton Form: WW

Everton Form: WD

Key Man: Calvert Lewin

A record breaking six home games undefeated in the Premier League for Brighton now and in this fixture, it counts. There has never been an away winner in the Premier League between these two, so the Seagulls will fancy their chances.

Where Brighton really excel is defensively. Graham Potter has crafted a brilliant formula of seasoned, no-nonsense generals led by captain Lewis Dunk, and hard-working but gifted players in Bissouma, Trossard and Neil Maupay. As a result, they can be incredibly tough to break down whilst maintaining that attacking potency that a team like Burnley may sacrifice.

However, Everton will be by far the stiffest opposition they have faced yet. The Toffees have slipped under the radar, counted out by many following the supposed clash between Rafa and fans. But opinions are swiftly changing as Rafa shows just why he is one of the most tactically brilliant managers in world football. Significantly, he seems to be getting the best out of his attacking players which was always the Achilles heel of his sides in the past. Dominic Calvert Lewin has had more touches in the opposition box than any other striker in the league, so he’s one to consider in FPL moving forward as he spearheads this Everton side.

It’s tough to split these two. I can’t see there being more than a goal deficit either way, but I think the quality of Calvert Lewin could be the difference.

Newcastle Form: LL

Southampton Form: LD

Key Man: Saint Maximin

Steve Bruce is getting a tough rap at Newcastle. The club can count themselves quite unlucky to have recorded two losses so far given how creative they’ve been going forward and I think they could have some joy here. Saint Maximin and Callum Wilson were deadly in the opener against West Ham in front of a packed home crowd and they could cause this Saints defence serious problems.

Of course, Southampton will be flying high following their result last weekend. Yet it was more United’s sloppy finishing rather than defensive solidarity that earnt Southampton that draw. Something backed up by United’s expected goal rating of nearly two and a half times the amount they put away.

Back Bruce’s boys to get off the mark in this one.

Norwich Form: LL

Leicester Form: WL

Key Man: Harvey Barnes

Leicester have been relatively disappointing so far. We all expected more offensively than they’ve shown despite playing two tough teams, which is surely an area Brendan will be looking to focus on here. Norwich love to come out and play, they weren’t frightened despite playing the two previous champions, which I think will free up Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy to make those snappy runs in behind that the Foxes so effectively utilise.

Meanwhile, for Norwich the season starts here. They’ve had a torrid time against the Premier League’s elite the past two Saturday’s, but they thumped Bournemouth 6-0 midweek, and will be hoping to ride that wave of momentum against Leicester.

It’ll be a tough ask once again to get a result, but they need something, negative spirals are a very real thing in English Premier League, with even more real consequences. If Teemu Pukki ever wanted to replicate his party form of 19/20, now sir, would be the time.

Norwich to score but Leicester to hit where it counts.

West Ham Form: WW

Palace Form: LD

Key Man: Benrahma

So, Michael Antonio fancies himself for the Golden Boot? Not too convinced on that one myself given the scoring records of his fellow Prem bagsmen but the enthusiasm is respectable. He might also get a couple here given how impressive the Hammers have been in their opening fixtures, although you could argue that where West Ham truly excel is on the counter and I’m not sure they’ll get as many opportunities for that against a Palace side that will likely sit deeper.

At least you’d presume that, as goals have hardly been their strong point this season, failing to notch in either game so far. It’s the third London Derby in a row for Viera and you feel like they need a big result soon considering the fact they face Liverpool and Spurs after the international break.

Could they get it here? Doubtful. The game probably won’t suit West Ham’s style all that much, nevertheless, when attacking players are on form the way Benrahma and Antonio are, goals come regardless.

Head-To-Head: 82 (Liverpool) – 41 – 65 (Chelsea)

Liverpool Form: WW

Chelsea Form: WW

Key Man: Virgil Van Djik

The eyes of the nation will be on this one. The two most impressive teams to date meet in the first real blockbuster clash since the return of fans to stadiums. And what a game it should be.

The return of Van Djik to the team has such an effect on Klopp’s side it’s staggering. The big Dutchman changes the entire way the team plays. The full backs are more daring, more attacking. The whole team presses with more confidence and intensity. And if the opposition are effective in their pressing, he’ll just ping a 70 yard pass out to the right wing like he’s just climbed out of bed for his morning porridge…

It’s no coincidence the Reds are back to their best and they should have won by considerably more against Burnley. But then you have Chelsea’s new man. Big Rom. The new and improved Rom, it must be said. He’s come on leaps and bounds since his time at Everton and Man United and his goal scoring record wasn’t half bad then. He just man handles defenders like no one I’ve ever seen, yet, has learnt to combine that with attacking intelligence much more than in previous years.

That will be the key battle. Who will come out on top? One criticism of Lukaku has been that he can never pull it out the bag against the best centre backs. And Van Djik is the very best of the best. He can’t be bullied, and I think he’ll be too smart for Lukaku even still. With the threat of Lukaku managed, or at least dimmed, the effectiveness of Jota, Salah, and the twelfth man can come to the fore, driving the Reds to a narrow victory.

The Chelsea train will be de-railed. You heard it here first.

I’m proud to say I called the 2-2 with Leeds last weekend. Nevertheless, they make games totally impossible to predict. And whilst with Burnley, you usually know what you’re going to get, currently they are yet to score a point despite ranking the 8th highest in the league for XG.

So, this one is tough. Leeds go in favourites and they certainly have superior quality within their ranks. Raphina was exceptional when trying to get the equaliser against Everton and I fully expect him to be the key man for Leeds. Whereas Burnley will be typically dogged and feisty. Something that the Leeds lads are no stranger to either.

If you fancy a bet, back booking points, in what will surely be an end-to-end scrap. If you’re looking for a result, a draw is surely the way to go.

Two wins from two and Harry Kane is staying put. It just goes to show that things may never be as bad as they seem. Although, in typical Spurs fashion they’ll probably go on a 5-game losing streak now…

I fully expect this to be Spurs all over. Watford were a flash in the pan against Villa. Very poor last time out and their squad just screams relegation in terms of their lack of quality. Nuno has got Spurs set up with a strong base that should provide Son and Kane the platform to go off and do what they do best in fixtures like this.

I fancy Kane for a brace and a comfortable victory.

Manchester United Form: WD

Key Man: Paul Pogba

I was overly harsh on Wolves before this season. You can see the direction Bruno Lage is trying to take this Wolves team despite having nothing to show for his troubles. They’ve played two good teams in Leicester and Spurs yet should have got something from both games. The missing piece of the puzzle is just the cherry on top. Chances are being tossed away left right and centre, and that needs addressing.

Oddly, given Man U bagged five against Leeds, that was the issue for them last weekend as well. They looked menacing but just couldn’t convert. Solskjaer will be praying that’s just a freak and in truth, you’d expect it to be. The United attack is glistening with talent, even more so now Cristiano Ronaldo is set to be re-signed.

Wolves will be stubborn and fight hard, however I think Paul Pogba will be the difference. He’s been on another level this season, even against Southampton he was brilliant and whether he continues in that grain of form will decide whether United can push for the title this campaign.

With the transfer window deadline fast approaching, we look at how some of the hottest academy prospects fare on loan, in search of first-team football.

Across Europe, developing youth talent has always been a major factor in the measure of success for the biggest clubs.

From the Class of 92’ to La Masia’s legendary crop to the more recent golden generations, youngsters have played a big part in helping clubs achieve success and record revenue.

Over the past few years, the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal have developed a reputation for bringing through the best youth talent in the country.

Famous for their large-scale loan system, Cobham has become responsible for the rising ‘Loan Army’ across the country. Despite enduring heavy criticism in the late 2000s, it has ultimately proved to be a success.

In this weekly segment, we’ll be evaluating how some of the most talked about academy stars are coping with their loan moves away from their parent clubs throughout the season. Shining a light on top performances, both in the English leagues and abroad.

It is through this very loan system that many stars have benefited from, with the likes of Harry Kane and Jermaine Defoe experiencing the positive sides.

Levi Colwill:

Chelsea loanee, Levi Colwill, has hit the ground running with Huddersfield Town in the Championship.

The 18-year-old centre back scored a last-minute winner at Sheffield United, his maiden professional goal, to compliment his impressive first four league games at the club.

Operating on the left of a back three, Colwill has really made an impression on ‘The Terriers’ fans, having played 100% of their league minutes.

It’s not just the supporters he has impressed, with teammate Naby Sarr describing the youngsters’ impact as ‘crazy’.

Coming from Chelsea, where the position he plays is in high demand, the England youth international will need to have a very consistent season to force his way up the pecking order.

Callum Doyle:

17-year-old Callum Doyle is enjoying his first loan spell away from Manchester City at League One outfit Sunderland AFC.

The youngster played 90 minutes in his senior debut for the Black Cats. Impressively, he kept Charlie Wyke very quiet from left-back, a forward who recorded a staggering 30 goals the previous season.

His manager Lee Johnson hailed him as having the best passing in the division following his debut.

With this season being his first season in professional men’s football, the full-back looks astonishingly comfortable, a trait that will become more valuable as you return up the divisions.

EFL pundit Sam Parkin was full of praise for the u18 England international. He was seen on Quest lauding the astounding performance of Doyle.

Deservedly the 21-year-old made the team of the week, if he can continue at a high level in the Championship, a step up into the Premier League – either at United or elsewhere.

With Romelu Lukaku, Fred and Dele Alli all under the magnifying glass this weekend, it’s like 2019 never ended, writes Shivam Pathak.

“At the age of 23, I always believed he had the possibility of becoming the best number nine in world football because he has absolutely everything.”

This was said about Romelu Lukaku by Roberto Martinez, back when he plied his trade in the Premier League – storming to the public eye with Everton. Martinez has now managed the Belgian twice – once at Goodison Park, and last at the Euros with his national side – perhaps you could say he just couldn’t turn down the opportunity to manage him again.

Romelu Lukaku did warn defenders when he was at Everton @Carra23 | @RomeluLukaku9 pic.twitter.com/YASeRY8Jp9

Indeed, Lukaku’s return to the Premier League had an air of inevitability about it. Inter Milan underwent a ‘restructuring’ that saw the side lose key players and their manager, with Lautaro Martinez now also linked away from the club.

With Chelsea, he provided everything they could have possibly been looking for in the opening minutes. A presence. Speed. Positioning. A product of the Belgian League, Lukaku had one dry spell at Stamford Bridge, after which he was sent to find success at two other British clubs before his fruitful two years in Italy.

As a spearhead for Thomas Tuchel’s set-up, Arsenal were the unfortunate first side who were condemned to suffer – and it could have been more. The post-match dissection continued long into the night and the start of the working week, as we witnessed the Gunners suffer some heavy punishment down the flanks during the first half. Reece James and Marcos Alonso could have enjoyed the Sunday papers while in possession – the Chelsea 3-4-3 getting the better of Arteta’s four-at-the-back.

Indeed, Arteta already finds himself second bottom of the table (not that that matters so much at this stage), but with injury problems beginning to accrue, something must change if this air of pessimism that is already growing is to be nipped in the bud. It’s City away next – a game that the bookmakers’ odds are not something to be looked at if you’re an Arsenal aficionado. We’ve seen stranger things, however.

On the topic, Michail Antonio has continued his path to establishing himself as one of the finest classic number nines that the League has to offer. After securing his passport, the West Ham man is set to play for Jamaica for the first time during next month’s international break – another spanner in the self-isolation works, though that remains a discussion for later. What must be said now, is how astonishingly he has marched into this season and continued right where he left off. Running off the shoulder, pressing and finishing, Antonio is becoming impossible to ignore – and an FPL essential, too.

A little lower down the pitch, a lack of definitive defensive midfield presence is perhaps what Manchester United’s drop of points this weekend could be attributed to. Nemanja Matic, a beacon of experience, was paired up with Fred – the latter having a forgetful night in the red jersey: the Saints’ goal was finally credited as an own goal against his name. The lack of a proper holding presence in Solksjaer’s set-up has stifled him time and time again – there’s only so far that firepower and a defensive wall will take him.

Indeed, there seems to be a revolving door for midfielders filling the gap between the centre backs and Fernandes and Pogba marauding forward. It’s not a role Donny van de Beek would want to do by himself, and with the transfer market still open, United fans are unsurprisingly questioning whether or not the pocket that has been deep enough for Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho will stretch to an out-and-out number six.

Jurgen Klopp found himself frustrated with the manner Burnley played against them to kick off the action on Saturday. He compared the side’s physical game to “wrestling” – at one point Diogo Jota was remarkably thrown to the floor by Johann Berg Gudmundsson as it became apparent that the game was up for the visitors. Mike Dean, who loves the opportunity to reach into his pocket and brandish the yellow card like he were the main character of a New York action flick reaching for his weapon, somehow booked no players during the game.

Tottenham’s second consecutive victory without Harry Kane fueled further insatiable media appetite. “They play better without Kane” has been a trope echoed through the times when he sat on the sideline for extensive periods, especially during their 2018/19 Champions League campaign in which Kane came back for the final. His tangible impact on Tottenham from a football perspective is, at this point, somewhat irrelevant: perhaps the question is whether or not they will play better without him from a psychological perspective, once this transfer saga finally comes to an end.

Son Heung-min was starved of opportunities for a lot of the game, but a Dele Alli penalty that he won was enough to bag the three points. We experienced a mini-Dele revival when Jose Mourinho took charge of the club, and has worked his way back into the starting XI once more. Is this another repeating trend, or is there a real window of opportunity for the 25-year-old to revert to his 2018 form? With Romelu Lukaku back in the limelight once again, there’s no reason why Alli, who enjoyed his football when Lukaku did in the Premier League, can’t put his name on the back page every week once more.
